Joaquin Hernandez Snr (pictured here) opened Café Hernandez in 1972, drawing on his deep knowledge of coffee from his home in Spain. The café quickly became a lively neighbourhood institution—a meeting place for local artists, regulars, and taxi drivers alike.

 

The Hernandez family ran the business for decades before selling the site to Dave and Amy Spanton in 2022. It was then reimagined as a licensed venue called Bar Hernandez, a Spanish cocktail & tapas bar that honours the spirit of the original café.
